The Road Home to Silicon Valley

Welcome to QuiltFabrication, and Silicon Valley, home to all things tech!

When first approached by Marian at Seams to be Sew about participating in the 2016 Road Home Row-along, I immediately said yes! Such an easy decision because the area I live in, Silicon Valley, is home to all of the great tech companies that we know and love.

My row depicts four large companies that are along major roads, and within close proximity to my humble home. We're talking a 15 mile radius, that's how close. Believe or not, 'tech tourism', the visiting of these companies as if they were tourist attractions, has sprung up. Today, I'll be your tour guide to these four companies.

Let's start at Facebook, where the 'thumbs up' sign greats us at the entrance.

Awesome quilt pattern in the background, huh? The buildings are nice, with lots of open sky and the bay on the backside.

Continuing down the freeway for a few miles sits Google, which in my opinion, has the best location. Perched on a small hill, surrounded by lots of trees and open space,

and, of course, plenty of parking for the famous green, yellow, and red bikes used by employees to get from building to building.

And just a half mile away, is it's friendly neighbor, LinkedIn, another favorite company.

Before hitting the freeway again, we could make a stop at the Computer History Museum, and check out just how far we've come in all things tech.

But let's continue on, past my house, and move on to Apple, another favorite. Below are the current headquarters,

with the Apple Campus 2, (the Spaceship that's under construction) and future headquarters a mile away.

Can you get a feel for how massive this building is? With the freeway to the south, retail west, residential north, and a hospital on the east, it's a huge campus in the middle of suburbia. There's a flyover view  (not mine) if you want to see more.

Of course, the list of tech companies goes on and on. Sorry if I left out other favorites, but there's just so much room in a 12 1/2" x 42" row!

Midweek Makers #39

Whose got fabric goodness to share this week on Midweek Makers?

I've got a sneak peek of my latest project,

my own design based on the applique method featured in the book Flip & Fuse Quilts. It's on the quilt frame, but will be finished up soon for sharing, though I have yet to figure out a name for it.

Did everyone get a chance to visit last week's party goers? One that I especially enjoyed was the story of Gossamer,

made by Zenia Rene at A Quilted Passion. What a fantastic piece for a newbie paper piecer - well done! Zenia Rene be sure to grab a 'Feature' button.

Who's Behind the Blog?

Going a bit off topic today, as this issue has bothered me for a few months now, and needs addressing. This is for all bloggers out there: please, put your name on your blog and sign your posts.
Yes, put your name on it.

I have found a ton of new-to-me blogs and want to leave a comment or follow, but have no idea who's writing because there's no name to be found anywhere. Nothing at the end of the post, nothing on the 'about me' page.

Blogging has many aspects, not only to show our work, but to get to know others who share the same passions. There's nothing better than connecting with a fellow blogger who has had a similiar experience, who can help us through, or who is inspired by our work.

But how is that relationship to develop if we don't even know the name of the fellow blogger? The blogging experience then becomes a loose get-together where people meet, exchange superficialties, and move on. Putting your name on your homepage, and signing your posts gives readers a chance to have conversations, to get to know you on a deeper level, and to develop a connection. Isn't that what we, as humans, need?

Consider this, an excerpt from GoodTherapy.com.

Human connection brings complex values to our lives: relationships give us a sense of belonging in the group, a sense of identity in contrast to others in that group, an almost therapeutic-support system, and reason not to feel lonely. We learn from others’ experiences and insight, and we learn together by pursuing new experiences alongside those we befriend.

So please, put your name on your blog - the rewards are worth it.

Midweek Makers #38

It's my favorite part of the week, playing hostess to Midweek Makers, where you can show off the fabric goodness you've been working on!

A big thank you to everyone for joining in, as I truly enjoy reading about what you're up to. It's my chance to connect with some wonderful quilters out there, and hopefully, for you too.

For me, sewing has slowed down since my whirlwind production of the three Shifting Shadows quilts. After some computer work this week, a design has evolved in which to start the Flip & Fuse technique, so I'm back to sewing. So far, I'm liking the use of fusible interfacing.

And not to forget our featured artist from last week, Mardi of Quilting Solutions, showed us how she dealt with a ton of seams in the center of her spiral quilt.

She went above and beyond, and it turned out beautifully - you'll have to read the story. Mardi, be sure to grab a 'Feature' button.
