Blended Quilting

Last week, while quilting the Holiday Forest runner, I was very conscious of making the background quilting blend in with the trees. And by that I mean making the background quilting in the small areas relate to each other, creating unity between all the small spaces.

Notice the landscape lines in between the trunks. See how they hit the trunks, follow the trunk for a small distance, and come back out again?

This is what I mean by 'blending'. It creates unified quilting between all parts instead of a bunch of separately quilted areas. It also makes the background quilting stay in the background, as the lines in the picture below appear to go behind the tree.

The drawn example below is what not to do. It creates a quilted area that doesn't relate to the other piecing - it just bounces back and forth. The background doesn't flow from one area to the next.

The correct way to quilt around pieced shapes is to have the quilting bump into the object, then stitch following the seam line, then resume quilting in the background. Yes, that means stitch-in-the-ditch.

The quilting moves to the element, stitches along side it, then moves away from the pieced element, ultimately creating a joining of all the elements.

Here's a closeup around one of the snowballs.

The outline stitching around it blends in with the background stitching.

This concept applies to any background fill, not just the lines I've shown you. All it takes is a bit of planning, and the willingness to stitch-in-the-ditch. But the results are worth it!

Happy Quilting!

Midweek Makers #30

Welcome to Midweek Makers, the place to share your creations! And this week, I'm sharing progress on my use-it-up, scrappy Christmas quilt.

Started two weeks ago, pairs of strips hung on the design wall, waiting for pressing,

and for inspiration as to what to do with them. So today, I laid them on the floor,

pondering the uneven mess. Horizontal rows, or vertical ones? Given that I had used up 90% of the remaining Christmas fabric, I opted for horizontal, as there wasn't enough fabric to make the rows longer. Cutting everything at around 60" wide makes for a nice throw size.

That's looking better! Any remaining scraps plus cut off pieces filled in the short rows.

Don't get too excited - this is not the final quilt! There's a design idea yet to work out, so stayed tuned!
And now on to Midweek Makers. Last week, Patty from Elm Street Quilts showed off her BB8,

which is just as adorable as a wall hanging as it was in the Star Wars movie! Well done Patty - be sure to grab a 'Featured' button!

Christmas in July Wrap Up

Yesterday was the last day of the 12 Days of Christmas in July Blog Hop, sponsored by Sarah at Confessions of a Fabric Addict. Many thanks to Sarah for organizing this hop, keeping everyone updated, and creating a Christmas quilt-along too! I had so much fun seeing all of the great projects that I'd love to do it again next year! How about it Sarah?

Confessions Of A Fabric Addict

So in the excitement for my day, Day 12, I totally forgot to feature the two wonderful bloggers from the day before. Carolyn at ...by CJ gave this tutorial for a really neat tree wall hanging,

while Tisha at Quilty Therapy showed how to make this adorable wreath.

                          fabric christmas wreath

And of course, here's the three featured bloggers from Day 12. Let's start with Beth at Cooking Up Quilts with this lovely table topper, Double Diamonds,

                          Paper Pieced Table Topper

and Linda at One Quilting Circle with this aptly named flying geese runner, Recalculating.

                                               thumbnail_20160725_101755

And lastly, my Holiday Forest runner and mats,

available as a pattern on Craftsy

Thanks again for joining me on this Christmas blog hop, and have a wonderful time creating your own Christmas goodies!

Holiday Forest for Christmas in July

Today, it's my turn for the 12 Days of Christmas in July Blog Hop! I do hope you visit the other two bloggers presenting today, Beth at Cooking Up Quilts, and Linda at One Quilting Circle. I'm sure they have some fabulous items to show as well.

My Christmas project is Holiday Forest, a table runner with matching placemats.

Made with a variety of green batiks for trees and a pretty blue snowflake print for the background, this runner and place mat set celebrate the Christmas season in a modern, understated manner.

Constructed with easy to paper piece trees, strip cut units for background pieces, and a few applique snowballs, this project was a snap to put together.

The runner measures approximately 15 1/2" x 44", and the place mats 11" x 15 1/2".

Background quilting is an easy landscape type fill, with the trees getting a simple shape repeat. Both add just the right amount of quilting, so as not to dominate the design.

Interested in making your own Holiday Forest runner? You can do just that, as I have a pattern available at both my Craftsy and Etsy stores. Just click the pink links to go to the stores.

Four more days left of the 12 Days of Christmas in July Blog Hop. Have you started sewing for Christmas yet?

Confessions Of A Fabric Addict

Today's featured Christmas bloggers are Alla at Rainbows, Bunnies, Cupcakes and Zenia at Quilted Passion. I had the chance opportunity to meet Alla at a quilt shop after she overheard me mention my quilt Wild Cherry Limeade

Turns out, she had seen it on my blog, and was thrilled to make the connection between quilt and quilter! And I must say, Wild Cherry Limeade is certainly a conversation starter! Not only is it wild, but it also won the Best Hand Guided Machine Quilting ribbon at the SM Fair. Who knew?

In case you missed yesterday, Michele at Crayon Box Quilt Studio showed us her quilt, Merry Jingle,

and Jan at The Colorful Fabriholic made these beautiful monogrammed pillows, complete with a tutorial.

Here again is the complete list, in case you're just joining in. My day is almost here!

Day 8 of 12 Days of Christmas in July

The Christmas craft ideas keep rolling in, as it's now Day 8 of the 12 Days of Christmas in July Blog Hop.
Confessions Of A Fabric Addict

Wasn't the Snowman Runner from Vicki at Vicki's Crafts and Quilting adorable?

And how about the handy zipper pouch that Jennifer at The Inquiring Quilter made?

Everyone has been so creative that I can't wait to see what Michele at Crayon Box Quilt Studio and Jan at The Colorful Fabriholic have dreamed up for tomorrow to celebrate Christmas!

And many thanks to Sarah at Confessions of a Fabric Addict in organizing the fun!

As for me, here's a sneak peek at my project.

It's all done, with the pattern's finishing touches complete, so that the big reveal is ready for Monday, Day 12.  Yesterday was play day, sewing the Christmas fabric scraps

into strips of various widths.

Boy, did that pile make a lot of strips! They are now sewn together in two's, with design decisions still in the works. Just winging this one - not much of a plan!

See you tomorrow with another Christmas in July blog hop update!

Midweek Makers #29

I must interrupt all the Christmas celebrating with Midweek Makers. Time to share what you're working on, and any Christmas crafts you've done!

Last week, Katy at Katyquilts had three different settings she was choosing from for her Twister blocks.

Personally, I liked this layout, though the others were nice too. I know you'll get it figured out, Katy. Be sure to grab a 'Featured' button. Everyone, link up your projects below!
